We are definitely working hard to build up the food side of the business, and we take the quality of food very seriously. At present we’re open 4 days a week for food – but by summer 2008 we hope to be serving all day, every day.
I read recently that the average cost of ingredients was £1 for a pub meal costing £7.95. We’re pleased to say you won’t find this sort of ratio at the Snowdon Inn.
We start by putting together the best menu we can, then we price up ingredient costs of each meal. We think that for each pound we charge 33p should be spent on ingredient costs, 33p on labour costs, with the rest available to cover overheads and profit. In this way we can bring the customer top quality food at an affordable price – and still make a profit.
Most of our fresh produce is sourced within Wales and much is organic. Some is from our on-site kitchen garden. Meat comes from local suppliers. Our pork comes from a farm some 5 miles away and is reared to organic principles (though not registered organic).
We work hard on maintaining great quality beer. We never go more than 7 days between beer-line cleaning and we look after our glasses and cellar. At present we have four pumps dedicated to local ales (the largest range of proper beer in the area) from the Conwy Brewery Welsh Pride and Honey Fayre) and the Purple Moose Brewery, Porthmadog (Snowdonia Ale and the award winning Glaslyn Ale). Teltey Smooth is also on offer. Lagers include Carlsberg, Carlsberg Export and Poretti. Strongbow cider is also on tap, and we reckon our Guiness is one of the best in the area.
We do the normal range of bottled drinks as well as some more unusual bottled lagers and ciders, and we always have well-priced organic cranberry, orange, and apple juices available. If you want coffee or tea we’ll get you a mug of fairtrade organic.
There is a selection of about ten wines available.
We are currently looking to establish a Welsh organic cider and perry on tap.
